Fortresses and historical landmarks
If you're more interested in history, you should know that Furuholmen is close to many old Norwegian historical landmarks.
About 20 minutes' drive away you'll find Hafslund Hovedgårdone of Norway's finest manor houses, which has played an important role in Norwegian history over the years. A few minutes more by car on the other side of Sarpsborg is Borregaard Hovedgårdwhere the Oslo Accords between Israel and Palestine were drawn up. In between these main farms is Borgarsyssel museum.
If you decide to drive to Fredrikstad, and like cobblestones and ducks, the best preserved fortified town in the Nordic region awaits you in Gamlebyenabout 50 minutes' drive away.
If you're particularly fond of historical sites, you'll also find Fredriksten Fortress in Halden, around 50 minutes away. The place where Carl XII was shot in 1718. You also have Høytorp fortress in Mysen less than 40 minutes away from Furuholmen.
Science and excitement for kids and adults
If you're more interested in science experiments, or if you have children who love science experiments, take a trip to Inspiria Science Center at Grålum in Sarpsborg.
The popular science center is specially designed for children, but that doesn't mean that adults can't be fascinated by what goes on there too! Inspiria hosts exciting events for both adults and children, including the themed exhibition Dinosauria 2.0, where you can see and learn more about full-size dinosaurs.

Do you want to explore Furuholmen and the surrounding area over several days, or maybe you want a day of play and swimming for the whole family?
At Grålum in Sarpsborg you will find Quality Hotel Sarpsborg with their Superland which offers both a water park and other activities for the whole family, such as mini golf and a play maze.
The waterpark offers water fun for both young and old, with water slides and water toys, four swimming lanes and a separate relaxation area with lower noise levels and higher water temperature.
